Using Goals as a Motivator: Private Coach Greg Sotnick on His Fitness Journey

Private coach Greg Sotnick has used ZOZOFIT to change the trajectory of his own weight loss journey, as well as the fitness and weight loss journeys of his clients. Read his story here.

Greg Sotnick’s success in his weight loss journey is a combination of his resiliency and goal-setting habits, but also his mindfulness practices which help him visualize his goals.

Private coach Greg Sotnick has used ZOZOFIT to change the trajectory of his own weight loss journey, as well as the fitness and weight loss journeys of his clients.

Greg has a degree in kinesiology and exercise science, but said despite fitness always being a part of his life, he wasn’t active or engaged in healthy habits throughout college.

“I ballooned up to 275 pounds by the time I graduated,” he said.

“I had all this knowledge about fitness, but nothing I was doing ever really worked for me until I changed my whole way of thinking.”

He wanted to start practicing what he preached to take back his health.

‘I realized that if I didn’t change… I was never going to be in control of it… I realized it was only up to me. It was only me that was able to do things and put in the action and the work to change things for myself.”

One of the hardest parts of any weight loss or fitness journey is taking that first step toward better health. Often leaping over the hurdle of getting started is one of the hardest parts about being intentional about diet, exercise, and other healthy choices.

Start with Nutrition, then Get in the Gym

When Greg knew he wanted to make changes, he started with nutrition. Beginning with what he ate was a building block to better health, and importantly, is something that can be done in the home.

Greg, like many of his coaching clients, can feel ashamed of being in the gym or will want to avoid the gym while in the starting phase of their fitness. It’s hard to be a “beginner” in a place full of experts.

Overtime, though, Greg gained confidence and began going to the gym “religiously.”

“Everything has been bodybuilding and traditional weight training centric for me because my goal in the future is to be a competitive bodybuilder.”

His bodybuilding goals fit in nicely with his goals for weight; Greg wants to finish his weight loss transformation and then spend a year to year-and-a-half building muscle and preparing for competition.

Greg’s success in his weight loss journey is a combination of his resiliency and goal-setting habits, but also his mindfulness practices which help him visualize his goals.

“I just sit for one or two minutes, close my eyes and think about being at my goal and experience it in each of the five senses. I connect how I’m going to feel when I get to that goal and the activity I’m about to engage in.”

Using ZOZOFIT Personally and as a Coach

Greg is in a unique position because he uses ZOZOFIT in both his personal weight loss journey and with his clients.

“I thought ZOZOFIT was super neat because as a coach, I always tell my clients to take pictures of themselves at least every two weeks because weighing in isn’t always enough,” he said.

“I love being able to see the three dimensional aspect of it. I can see [my body] at all angles.”

He also said that ZOZOFIT’s unique 3D body scanning technology shows a true representation of the body. The traditional scale doesn’t show the full picture and even taking progress photos can be misleading because of lighting and posing.

Greg scans at least every two weeks because he is very results-centric, but says anyone with general health goals should be fine scanning once a month since progress may not be fast enough to see a big change.

“I like [scanning] at least every other week to just be able to see that change because now that I’m nearing what I call the peak of my cut, which is where I’m trying to get down to my goal weight and am getting close to it, I’m seeing more fine-tuned changes happen, so [there is a] benefit in scanning more often.”

In his personal training and fitness goals, Greg utilizes some key features of the ZOZOFIT app to keep track of his progress. The ColorMetric and goal setting features are personal favorites. Greg has set a goal for his body fat percentage, which allows him to see how he has moved toward achieving his goal.

Greg often recommends ZOZOFIT because he thinks it is a more holistic way to track progress compared to just stepping on a scale.

“[The scale] misses out on so much. What ZOZOFIT can do for you is actually show you the differences in what most people care about when they are trying to be more physically active and have better habits for their health,” he said.

“I like being able to see the changes, not just see a number on a scale and have to interpret that.”
